Rybny staw, czyli Rybnik
Rybnik to miasto w województwie śląskim, jest to największy ośrodek centralny aglomeracji rybnickiej i Rybnickiego Okręgu Węglowego. Rybnik pod względem historycznym leży na Górnym Śląsku.
Nazwa miasta pochodzi z okresu przedindustrialnego, w którym mieszkańcy Rybnika utrzymywali się w głównej mierze z rybactwa. W miejscu gdzie znajduje się teraz rynek, był kiedyś ogromny, rybny staw. W gwarze śląskiej słowo "rybnik" oznacza właśnie staw z rybami.
Rybnik znajduje się na Płaskowyżu Rybnickim, który jest częścią Wyżyny Śląskiej. Najwyższym wzniesieniem w mieście jest Góra Grzybówka (291 m.n.p.m.). Przez Rybnik płyną dwie rzeki: Nacyna i Ruda, jest też parę potoków.
Pierwsze ślady człowieka na terenie obecnego Rybnika szacowane są na około 8 tysięcy lat przed naszą erą. Natomiast w średniowieczu w dolinie Nacyny powstała osada rybacka, która dała początki miasta Rybnika.
W Rybniku znajduje się sześć parków miejskich (Park Kozie Góry, Park im. św. Jana Sarkandra, Park Górnika, Park Osiedlowy, Park im. H. Czempiela i Park na Górce), są zieleńce (Zieleniec im. Rozalii Biegeszowej, Zieleniec Starościński, Zieleniec przy ulicy Wieniawskiego, Zieleniec Bukówka, Zieleniec pod Topolami, Zieleniec przy Zamku czy skwer z fontanną), użytki geologiczne (meandry rzeki Rudy, okrzeszyniec i kencerz) i pomniki przyrody (wierzba krucha oraz jezion przy ulicy Hellera, dwie lipy szerokolistne przy ulicy Gminnej, dwie lipy drobniste na ulicy Arki Bożka i głaz narzutowy przy KWK Chwałowice).
W Rybniku znajdują się 2 kopalnie węgla kamiennego które są częścią Polskiej Grupy Górniczej: KWK Chwałowice i KWK Jankowice. W ciągu ostatnich lat znaczna część hut i fabryk została zamknięta, a tereny po zakładach zostały zagospodarowane przez galerie handlowe czy sklepy wielkopowierzchniowe.
Zabytki Rybnika to m.in. Bazylika św. Antoniego, budynek dawnego Starostwa, neoklasycystyczny budynek nowego ratusza, klasycystyczny dawny ratusz miejski, Zamek Piastowski, Zespół Szpitalny św. Juliusza, Wieża ciśnień i figura św. Jana Nepomucena.
